Why does pool water turn green?
Green swimming pool water does not happen overnight. It is almost always caused by an unbalanced chemical level or insufficient filtration allowing algae spores to multiply rapidly.
1. Incorrect pH Level (>7.6 or <7.0)
At a pH of 7.8, over 80% of added chlorine becomes inactive! Algae multiply unchecked.
2. Cyanuric Acid Chlorine Lock (CYA > 70 ppm)
Continuous use of chlorine tablets accumulates cyanuric acid. Above 70 ppm, chlorine is trapped and cannot kill bacteria.
3. Insufficient Filtration Time in Warm Weather
Above 25°C, algae growth rate doubles. Short filtration cycles leave the water stagnant for too long.
